Desert Spirits

The two series of works, to which the above title refers, were born after two visits I made in the Sinai desert at 1996 and in the deserts around Mitzpe Ramon at 1999.

The meeting with the Sinai desert in 1996, which actually was my first significant encounter with this desert [after years of rejections to visit there – for reasons that never were clarified enough] was really amazing… not only because the exposing in full intensity of the various majestic sights of this desert, but rather because it became clear to me – without doubt – that the “spirit” of the desert appears in many of my works, which were created during the eighties - without being conscious at all to this fact then, while the works were created - until my real encounter with this desert in 1996. The intensive meeting about three years later with the views of the desert around Mitzpe Ramon, not only caused me to clarify finally the connection between the above mentioned works of mine and the deserts sights, but also finalized my decision to bring into a unification of some of the works created that time – especially in the eighties as said above – and the photographs I made during the years 1996 and 1999.

At the end of 1999 [during December 1999 and January 2000] a collection of these two series of works were exposed in a exhibition which took place simultaneously in two spaces in Mitzpe Ramon: in “Merkaz Hamevakrim” [the local Museum] and in Ramon in. [View: Mitzpe Ramon 99]

In the meantime – after the exhibition in Mitzpe Ramon – new and additional works were created and added to the two series.

רוחות מדבר

שתי הסדרות של העבודות, שהכותרת שלעיל מתייחסת אליהן, נולדו לאחר שני ביקורים שערכתי במדבר סיני בשנת 1996 ובערבות של אזור מצפה רמון ב 1999.

הפגישה עם מדבר סיני ב 1996, שהייתה למעשה פגישתי הממשית הראשונה עם המדבר הזה [לאחר ששנים דחיתי הצעות לבקר בו - מבלי שטרחתי מעולם להבהיר לעצמי את הסיבה לכך] הייתה פגישה "מהממת" ממש...לא רק שנחשף לפני במלוא עוצמתו ההוד וההדר שבנופיו השונים של המדבר הזה, כי אם גם זאת: נתברר לי בצורה שאין מאחוריה כל ספק, כי ה"רוח" של המדבר הזה מצויה ברבים מציוריי, שנוצרו בעיקר במהלכן של שנות השמונים – מבלי שהייתה לי כהוא זה מודעות לכך במהלכן של השנים שבהן הן נוצרו ובעצם עד לפגישתי הממשית עם המדבר הזה ב 1996. הפגישה כעבור כשלוש שנים עם הנוף המדברי שבאזור מצפה רמון לא רק הבהירה לי ביתר שאת את הקשר בין ציורי הנ"ל לבין הנופים הללו, כי אם גם גיבשה את החלטתי להביא לידי אחדות את מה שציירתי בזמנו – בעיקר במהלכן של שנות השמונים כאמור - לבין מה שצילמתי במהלכן של השנים 1996 ו 1999.

בסוף 1999 [ליתר דיוק בין ה 3.12.99 לבין 1.1.2000] הצגתי מבחר מעבודות שתי הסדרות הללו בתערוכה ששמה היה "אלים, חיות ורוחות – במדבר". התערוכה הוצגה במקביל בשני חללי תצוגה במצפה רמון: ב"מרכז המבקרים" וב"פונדק רמון", לאחר שהגב' אושרה גבאי מנהלת "מרכז המבקרים" ומר אורן אלטמן מנכ"ל "פונדק רמון" ניאותו ללא היסוס להעמידן לרשותי [התערוכה ב"מרכז המבקרים" הוערכה לאחר מכן לבקשת המנהלת בחודש נוסף].

בינתיים לאחר התערוכה במצפה רמון נוצרו עבודות לא מעטות נוספות, שלא היו קיימות במהלכה של התערוכה ב 1999.
